June
@ Amistad
June 1, 2010
Greetings Amistad!
We had perfect weather and plenty of food at our Picnic in the Park last night!
And now here's the tentative schedule for our Friday evening Agape Meal gatherings during June. Check the website for updates!
Friday,
June 4 – We'll focus on the topic of "Sacred Space" using
a wonderful reflection by Pastor Susan Meeter in this month's newsletter from
Mira Vista UCC in El Cerrito:
http://storage.cloversites.com/miravistaunitedchurchofchrist/documents/June%20newsletter.pdf
We'll also look at a slide show of some of the sacred spaces at the recent
annual gathering of the Northern California Nevada Conference, United
Church of Christ at the Asilomar conference grounds. Question to
think about: what does "sacred space" mean for us as we meet
in homes and public places like Alamo Creek Park? What sacredness can we
bring to the space we use? We'll also celebrate Peggy's birthday this
evening!
Friday,
June 11 -- Meiling will lead us in a conversation about
"Population: The Last Taboo" from the May/June issue
of Mother Jones Magazine. "What unites the Vatican,
lefties, conservatives, environmentalists, and scientists in a
conspiracy of silence?" (The insert "Masters of the
Uterus" is an interesting timeline.) See http://motherjones.com/special-reports/2010/05/population-last-taboo for
background info.
Friday,
June 18 -- June is the month of anniversaries for us! Next
week we'll celebrate 10 years of Amistad United Church of Christ in
Vacaville, and this week we'll remember the "Amistad Incident"
of June 1839 when kidnapped Mendi people revolted aboard the Schooner La
Amistad and turned the ship toward freedom.
Friday, June 25 -- Amistad is 10! Anniversary Observance: Past, Present, Future. We'll gather from 6 - 8 p.m. (note earlier time this week only) to celebrate, to look back, to look forward. We'll invite some of those who have shared the journey with us and remember those who have died. I'll provide salad, bread and grape juice -- you're invited to add something to the table if that's convenient for you.
A few more early summer notes:
Monday, June 21 is our semi-annual Greet the Sun on the Solstice gathering: 5:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Christian Church of Vacaville, 66 Vine Street. Sunrise is predicted at 5:44 a.m. after which we can go out to coffee somewhere and reflect on the turning points in our lives.
If it's June, the Creekwalk Concert series is coming up! We've enjoyed going on-the-road to this as a group every summer, so check out the schedule and tell me what kind of a band you'd like to hear: New Country? Cajun & Zydeco? Rhythm & Blues? Eagles Tribute? Latin Pop? The bands and dates are listed here: http://www.creekwalk.com/index.cfm?page=artists Let me know which one you'd like to hear!!
Mission Fund Update: in May we emptied out our Mission Fund by sending $100 each to Jubilee USA and SafeQuest Solano. These choices maintained our commitment to mission support of both global policy agencies and local service agencies. We've received nice acknowledgements from each. But already our Mission Fund has accumulated a little over $100! As luck would have it, I've heard from Matthew Pinkerton-Lloyd that he's participating in the "Team in Training" fundraising effort of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and he invites donations to support this cause. (See http://pages.teamintraining.org/rw/pactri10/mpinkerton) What would you think of sending $100 to support Matthew in this? Let me know!
blessings
and hope to all --
Marian
