October @ Amistad 2008

Greetings Amistad!

Eid Mubarak to all!  (for those who missed our conversation last Friday, that means have a Blessed Eid al-Fitr celebrating the end of the Ramadan month of fasting for Muslims.)  And a blessed Rosh Hashanah as well!

Check our website www.amistad-vacaville.org for the public "No on 8" recommendation that we decided on!  I sent the Letter to the Editor to both the Vacaville Reporter and the Fairfield Daily Republic -- don't know yet when (or if) they will print it.  A number of other UCC congregations have publically recommended "No on 8" as have all 6 Episcopal bishops in California!

Here are tentative plans for Friday evenings in October.  Watch the website for changes.  Note that Keith and I will be in Mexico on Friday, Oct. 24 -- Terry will host "Video 'n Pizza Nite" at her home that evening.  Last I heard she was still taking suggestions for a video.  (We'll try to bring back chocolate skulls for our Día de los Muertos celebration on October 31!)

Friday, October 3 -- Jubilee, One and Bread for the World.   Meiling will give a brief summary of our involvement with Jubilee USA.  Special guest will be Deacon Cookie Clark of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Vacaville; she will talk about that congregation's involvement with the One organization.  We'll also summarize the work and mission of Bread for the World.  All three organizations are related through their policy and advocacy work for justice and an end to global poverty.

Friday, October 10 -- Loaves 'n Fishes, another look at the gospel story of the Feeding of the Twenty Thousand.  What implications does this story, with its eucharistic overtones, have for a hungry world today?

Friday, October 17 -- Eve's Bible Redux... we'll look at another chapter in this volume of "A Woman's Guide to the Old Testament" by Sarah Forth.  How does Ch. 10 sound to you:  "Lewdness, Whoring, and Womb Love: A Lexicon of Prophetic Speech"?

Friday, October 24 -- Video 'n Pizza Nite at Terry's home in Fairfield.  Terry has stated that she will be devastated, disappointed and will feel totally rejected and unloved if no one comes!!  So plan accordingly...

Friday, October 31 --  Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.  Bring your dead with you -- a photo, a trinket, a story or an anecdote -- and let them share with us our food, song, communion, prayer and (perhaps) tears.  With luck we'll have some chocolate skulls for you!

In October we once again invite contributions to the United Church of Christ denomination-wide special offering, Neighbors in Need, supporting ministries that address poverty, economic development, human rights, peacemaking, violence, racial and economic justice, environmental concerns, and public policy advocacy in the United States.  We at Amistad have a vested interest in the Neighbors in Need offering as it helps fund the work of the UCC Justice & Witness Ministries, the sponsor of our William Sloane Coffin local church justice award!

October is also the time when we fill up a Balikbayan Box for shipment to Cebu in time for Christmas.  Small toys, children's books, school supplies, dried fruits and candies, children's chewable vitamins, etc. -- what we might call "stocking stuffers".  We'll fill in any empty space with bags of rice and cans of tuna, Vienna sausages and Spam.  We'll ship the box by the end of October.

At the end of September the balance in our Mission Fund stood at $83.68.  More will accumulate during October.  It has been our tradition to send $100 to the Vacaville Veterans' Hall for their Community Thanksgiving Dinner, and to pay the shipping costs for the Christmas Balikbayan Box.  Is that okay with folks to do that again?  (The Neighbors in Need offering will, of course, be above and beyond that.)

California Church IMPACT, advocacy arm of the California Council of Churches, has published its highly-regarded Ballot Recommendations at http://www.calchurches.org/2-Ballot-Recommendation.htm.   I will print out copies and have them available here.  I myself really rely on the in-depth analysis of ballot propositions by the staff and board of IMPACT; on our behalf they advocate for those who can't afford high-priced lobbyists: low-income mothers, hungry children, the elderly.  Voting matters.

Recycling Reminder:  for some unfathomable reason, apartment dwellers in Vacaville don't get recycling service.  A couple of folks have been bringing their "special offering" of recyclables on Friday evenings to put in our big blue bin.  Others are welcome to do so, at least until the bin starts to overflow!  For a list of acceptable items see http://www.vacavillerecycling.com/vaca_pages/articles.html#toters .  I also keep a jar of used batteries which I take to the Vacaville Household Hazardous Waste center; you are welcome to contribute to that as well!

In closing, please keep B.J. in your prayers as she undergoes rehab and physical therapy after hip replacement surgery.  Address for cards:
